"The fantasy of creating life is as old as civilization." — from the film

Myths and stories throughout history speak to humanity's desire to bring the inanimate to life — Ovid's Metamorphoses tells of the sculptor Pygmalion, who fell in love with his own statue, the "ivory virgin" Galatea.

A Perfect Fake examines the persistence of that myth in the modern world, following men who have turned away from conventional relationships to pursue emotional and physical connections with erotic surrogates and simulations.

The film explores the emerging market for hyper-realistic simulations of women, from computer-generated virtual pornography to the more startling world of life-size "love dolls" — companions that their owners regard as unique individuals, each as singular as a snowflake.
